Stuck at a plateau after 6 months of solid SEO work

Title: Navigating SEO Plateaus: Strategies for Continued Growth After Six Months

After dedicating six months to implementing a comprehensive SEO strategy for a local business, I have reached a pivotal moment that many SEO professionals may encounter: a plateau in progress. While the initial phase was promising, and we’ve achieved notable success, the results have stagnated. Here’s a breakdown of our current position:

  • The business successfully ranks in the map pack for 9 out of 10 target keywords.
  • All target keywords are featured on the first page of organic search results.
  • We are also leveraging local service ads (LSAs) and search ads alongside our organic efforts.

Despite these accomplishments, the website is generating only 80–90 clicks per month from organic search. Notably, both our map pack and organic rankings seem to have leveled off; many keywords are caught in positions 3 to 7 without significant movement. Given that the location has a population of around 22,000, I am beginning to wonder if we’ve reached our peak potential—especially since the highest search volume for our primary keywords is a mere 90.

As I reflect on our situation, I have a couple of pressing questions:

  1. What additional steps can I take to further elevate our SEO performance? Is it plausible that we have indeed reached a cap due to the low search volume for our primary keywords, or are there strategies that could unlock further growth?

  2. Organic Search Dynamics: I’ve observed that the homepage is currently ranking above individual service pages for all related keywords. This raises a concern: Is it possible for the service pages to rank higher than the homepage, and if so, how can we achieve this without risking keyword cannibalization?

To address these challenges, I would appreciate any insights or strategies from those who have encountered similar scenarios in their SEO journeys. By sharing experiences and solutions, I hope to formulate a plan that will drive continued growth for this local business while maximizing our existing resources.

Strategies for Overcoming SEO Plateaus

In navigating these complexities, consider implementing the following strategies:

  • Content Optimization: Analyze the current content on both the homepage and individual service pages. Ensure that each page is optimized for its targeted keywords and includes unique, high-quality content. This may involve revising service pages to make them more informative, engaging, and relevant to user intent.

  • Building Internal Links: Enhance the internal linking structure to ensure that service pages are well connected to the homepage and other relevant content. This can help distribute authority more evenly and potentially elevate the rankings of service pages.

  • Local SEO Enhancements: Explore additional local SEO tactics, such as acquiring more local backlinks, optimizing Google My Business (GMB) listings, and engaging in community events to boost visibility.

  • Review Competitor Strategies: Conduct a competitive analysis to identify what similar businesses are doing to attract clicks and traffic. This can spark new ideas for improvement.

By considering these avenues, it is possible to reignite growth and overcome current hurdles in your SEO journey. Sharing knowledge within the community will not only assist in generating fresh ideas but also foster a collaborative spirit among professionals striving for excellence in digital marketing.
