In the evolving landscape of digital marketing, local search engine optimization (SEO) has emerged as a vital tool for healthcare professionals seeking to boost their visibility and connect with local patients. Over the past two to three months, I applied a targeted local SEO strategy for healthcare practitioners across different specialties—including dentistry, ophthalmology, gynecology, and cardiology. In this article, I will outline the methods I employed, the challenges encountered, and the noteworthy results achieved.

Creating Location-Specific Pages

The cornerstone of my approach was the development of location-based web pages. Surprisingly, many healthcare providers are hesitant to expand their website content. Out of four clients, only two were open to adding these additional pages. For the dentist and cardiologist, I designed five distinct location-specific pages each, linking them directly to their main service pages.

On each service page, I ensured that all primary treatments and services were clearly outlined. For the location-specific pages, I employed a straightforward optimization strategy, enhancing the title tags, URLs, meta descriptions, and H1 headings with relevant keywords. Additionally, I integrated related keywords naturally throughout the H2 and H3 headings. To facilitate patient communications, I included a click-to-call button and embedded the Google Business Profile map on every page, streamlining access for potential clients to contact or locate the practice.

Crafting Engaging Content

Another critical element of my strategy was content creation. I developed location-specific blog posts, primarily structured in a question-and-answer format. Each post began with a brief introduction followed by questions that potential patients might search for, answered succinctly. Over two months, I published 14 blogs, ensuring that each piece was interconnected through internal links, guiding readers from one topic to related services and the contact page.

Encouraging Patient Reviews

Obtaining patient reviews presented one of the most significant challenges. Many healthcare providers expressed difficulty in soliciting feedback from their patients. I worked closely with them, encouraging a proactive approach to gathering reviews from satisfied patients. To facilitate this process, I provided examples of detailed reviews to guide patients on the kind of feedback that could be valuable, all while allowing them to express their thoughts in their own words.

To keep their Google Business Profiles active and engaging, I routinely posted updates, shared images, and incorporated geo-tagged photos, despite the limited impact of the geo-tagged images. The aim was to prevent the profiles from appearing neglected.

Remarkable Results

The outcomes of these strategies were impressive. One cardiologist’s monthly call volume increased from approximately six calls before our collaboration to around fifteen in the first month and twenty calls in the second month. Simultaneously, the dentist experienced a rise in calls from roughly 100 per month to 113 in the initial month and further to 142 calls in the second month.

While the strategies implemented were fundamental aspects of SEO—location page creation, basic on-page optimization, internal linking, review generation, and maintaining an active Google Business Profile—the tangible impact was significant. This experience serves as a reminder of the power of foundational SEO practices in enhancing local visibility for healthcare providers.

In summary, the journey highlighted the importance of strategic online presence management for healthcare practitioners. By diligently implementing these essential strategies, healthcare professionals can effectively increase their reach and engage with prospective patients in their local communities.
