On August 25, 1958, at age 48, Ando launched Chicken Ramen, the world’s first instant noodles, which he called “magic ramen.” Initially a luxury due to its high cost, it quickly caught the imagination of consumers. He continued refining the product, making it cheaper, better, and more accessible.

By 1971, at age 61, Ando had pioneered Cup Noodles—a waterproof, portable container that transformed instant ramen into a global phenomenon. The product’s convenience and innovation led to the rapid worldwide adoption of instant noodles.

Ando’s pursuit of innovation did not stop there. Even at the age of 91, he was working on groundbreaking projects, including developing space-friendly ramen. His efforts paid off when, in 2005, at age 95, his “Space Ram” became the first instant noodles to be consumed in space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery.
