Title: Is Your Business Being Recommended by AI? The Growing Importance of Local SEO

As the landscape of digital recommendations continues to evolve, businesses must adapt to the shifting preferences of consumers seeking local services. Recent trends indicate that an increasing number of individuals are bypassing traditional search engines like Google in favor of AI-driven platforms, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. These AI models are being queried for local recommendations, prompting inquiries like “best dentist near me in [city]” or “top-rated plumber in [neighborhood].”

These AI tools deliver confident and specific suggestions, which can significantly impact the visibility of local businesses. If your business isn’t mentioned in these AI-generated recommendations, it may as well be invisible to the searcher.

Key Findings About AI Recommendations and Local SEO

Through extensive exploration of local SEO dynamics over the past few months, I’ve identified several notable patterns, particularly regarding how businesses are represented in AI recommendations:

  1. Influence of Customer Reviews and GBP Activity: Businesses that boast numerous positive reviews and robust activity on Google Business Profile (GBP) are more likely to receive mentions in AI responses. However, this correlation does not imply a direct relationship with Google Maps rankings. It is entirely possible to rank highly on Maps and remain unrecognized by AI platforms.

  2. The Value of Review Content: The content of customer reviews plays a crucial role in shaping AI recommendations. These models tend to rely heavily on the actual written feedback from customers rather than merely the overall star ratings.

  3. Importance of Third-Party Mentions: Businesses that are featured on external sites—such as local directories, news articles, and blogs—tend to enjoy greater visibility in AI-generated recommendations. This highlights the significance of building a strong online presence beyond just Google.

The Challenge for Marketing Agencies

A pressing concern for marketing agencies is the lack of transparency akin to what Google Search Console provides. Clients have little to no insight into whether their businesses are appearing in AI recommendations, resulting in a significant gap in visibility and potential client engagement.

In response to this challenge, I am currently developing a solution to track the presence of businesses across various AI platforms, alongside other GBP metrics. I welcome discussions with anyone interested in the methodology or insights derived from this work.

A Call to Action: Check Your Client Visibility

Regardless of your level of interest in AI tracking tools, it is imperative to start manually auditing your top clients’ representation in AI recommendations. The results may surprise you and highlight areas for improvement in your local SEO strategies.
