As a residential plumber located in Westminster, MD, I recently navigated the challenging landscape of online advertising, specifically targeting local services. My experience with Google Local Services Ads (LSA) raised concerns about their effectiveness, leading me to explore alternative platforms.

Initially, I invested in Google LSA, which promised to connect me with potential clients. However, my foray into this advertising method resulted in a single lead that cost me $109.21. The customer, believing they had a leak, eventually required only a free estimate, resulting in no income and a significant expense for my business. Disheartened by this experience, I promptly disengaged from Google LSA.

Seeking a more effective solution, I switched to Thumbtack and allocated a budget of $100 per week for advertising. My results from this platform were markedly different and more promising. In just one week, I generated a total of eight leads, which translated into tangible business opportunities. Here’s a breakdown of my metrics during this period:

  • Total Spent: $134.83
  • Average Cost Per Lead: $44.94
  • Total Profit from Hires: $675.00
  • Lead-to-Hire Conversion Rate: 3 out of 8 (37.5%)
  • Net Profit: $540.17 (approximately 400% ROI)

Individual lead costs varied, ranging from $4.69 to $37.72, with my three successful hires yielding returns of $150, $350, and $175, respectively. It was astounding to realize that my one unsuccessful lead from Google LSA was more expensive than the cumulative cost of six leads from Thumbtack.

While Thumbtack’s recent shifts toward higher lead pricing, under the guise of incorporating “AI” enhancements, raise some concerns about future costs, my immediate results have proven highly beneficial.

As I continue to evaluate advertising methods that deliver a solid return on investment, I’m also considering Nextdoor advertising as an additional avenue.
