Title: Insights from AI: Evaluating Local Businesses Through Six Different Engines

In an age where artificial intelligence plays an increasingly vital role in consumer decision-making, gaining visibility among local businesses can be a challenge. To better understand how AI engines perceive local businesses, I embarked on a systematic project, utilizing six prominent AI platforms: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, and Copilot. By evaluating their recommendations across various business categories and locations, I discovered some noteworthy patterns.

Key Findings from the Analysis

  1. Visibility Gaps: A staggering 73% of the local businesses assessed were completely overlooked by at least four out of the six AI engines. This was particularly surprising, as many of these businesses currently rank on the first page of Google search results.

  2. Directory Listing Significance: Businesses with comprehensive and consistent listings across 15 or more online directories were three times more likely to receive recommendations from AI systems. This highlights the importance of maintaining accurate and uniform information across multiple platforms.

  3. Content Clarity is Crucial: Contrary to what one might expect, the leading factor influencing AI recommendations was not traditional metrics such as backlinks or domain authority. Instead, it was the clarity of the content provided by the businesses. Those that articulated clear, specific, and quotable descriptions of their services were significantly more favored by the AI engines.

  4. The Power of FAQ Sections: Interestingly, businesses that included structured FAQ pages garnered disproportionate attention from the AI systems. It appears that AI engines have a penchant for pulling from well-organized question-and-answer content, enhancing the likelihood of being recommended.

  5. Rethinking Customer Reviews: Many businesses boasting hundreds of five-star ratings on Google found themselves invisible to AI recommendations. While these reviews can improve visibility in Google’s Map Pack, they do not directly influence AI-driven recommendation algorithms. This disconnect underscores an evolving challenge for business owners: performing well on traditional search engines does not equate to recognition by AI platforms.

Engagement Invitation

As AI continues to shape the landscape of local business visibility and consumer choices, I encourage fellow business owners and marketers to share their experiences. Have you experimented with how different AI engines perceive your business or those of your clients? What patterns have you observed? Your insights could contribute to a broader understanding of the interplay between AI capabilities and local market dynamics.

  • This study highlights some critical insights into how AI engines interpret and recommend local businesses, revealing that structured content and accurate directory listings significantly influence visibility—even more than traditional metrics like backlinks or review volume. It underscores the importance of optimizing for AI by focusing on clear, specific descriptions, well-organized FAQ sections, and maintaining consistent online presence across platforms.

What’s particularly fascinating is the apparent disconnect between traditional SEO success—such as high review counts and high Google Maps rankings—and AI recognition. This suggests that businesses aiming to leverage AI-driven discovery should tailor their online content to match AI preferences, emphasizing clarity and structured data rather than solely focusing on conventional SEO metrics. It also opens up a broader conversation about how local businesses can adapt their digital strategies in an AI-centric world, perhaps by integrating more structured data and conversational content to align with AI algorithms.

Overall, as AI continues to evolve, understanding and adapting to these new dynamics will be crucial for local businesses striving to maintain visibility and relevance in increasingly automated discovery landscapes.
