Harnessing Deep Personal Challenges to Innovate in Mental Health Technology: The Journey of Building an Automated Mood Tracking Solution
Ten years ago, I faced a significant mental health diagnosis that profoundly reshaped my life. At the time, I was in my second year of college and found myself hospitalized for an entire month. During my recovery, my mother, a psychiatrist, alongside my therapists and doctor, recommended tracking my mood to better understand and manage my mental health. Although initially hesitant, I eventually recognized the importance of this practice, which led to two challenging yet illuminating years of self-discovery and behavior tracking.
Motivated by personal experience and dissatisfaction with existing mood tracking tools, I embarked on a self-taught journey into coding. My goal was to develop a more reliable, engaging, and sustainable way to monitor emotional well-being. The result was a manual mood tracker app that resonated with a broad audience, eventually being used by over 250,000 people worldwide. The app gained recognition, including featuring on Apple’s front page in the App Store, and generated approximately $100,000 in revenue through a freemium subscription model.
Recognizing the need for a more seamless and automated approach, I developed Misü — an innovative mood tracking platform designed to address the common challenge of maintaining consistent tracking habits. The primary obstacle with manual methods is that they require ongoing effort, which many users find difficult to sustain over time.
What is Misü?
Misü (www.misu.app) leverages facial micro-expressions captured via webcam to automatically monitor users’ moods as they interact with their computers. By analyzing these subtle cues, Misü provides insights into mood trends and how different applications or online activities influence mental health. The platform aims to empower individuals with continuous, unobtrusive mood tracking, offering valuable data to support mental well-being.
Research indicates that approximately 10% of the U.S. population has engaged in mood tracking at some point, yet retention remains a challenge with manual methods. Misü has demonstrated that users tend to track their moods ten times longer when utilizing automated analysis, significantly improving consistency and insights.
