Title: Optimizing Local Search Rankings by Streamlining Subcategories and Service Areas
In the ever-evolving landscape of local search engine optimization (SEO), minor adjustments can lead to significant improvements in rankings. A recent case study from my experience emphasizes the importance of refining subcategories and service areas for businesses aiming to enhance their online presence.
A client I collaborated with was initially focused on maintaining an excessively broad range of service areas—over eight in total—along with numerous subcategories that were only marginally related to their core offerings. This strategy ultimately hindered their ability to rank effectively for their primary service. In fact, they were positioned beyond the 9th spot in search results for their main service in Orlando, a clear indication that their approach was ineffective.
I explained to the business that including a multitude of irrelevant service areas dilutes their relevance in Google’s eyes. For a business to be recognized as a credible local entity, it is crucial to focus on areas that directly pertain to its primary location and services. This company, despite having a physical address, was missing the opportunity to leverage its local presence effectively.
To enhance their ranking, I implemented a more focused strategy. I removed all subcategories that did not closely align with their main service, retaining only two that were relevant, in addition to one primary category. Furthermore, I scaled back the service areas to just one main focus area.
The results were noteworthy. Within two weeks of implementing these changes, the client experienced a marked improvement in their search rankings. This case highlights a valuable lesson for any business struggling with stagnant SEO performance: sometimes, less is more.
If your business finds itself in a similar plateau, consider streamlining your subcategories and service areas. Focus on relevance and local specificity to empower your local search strategy, and you may very well see the desired rankings you’ve been aiming for.

This is a compelling illustration of how precision in local SEO can significantly impact rankings. It’s a reminder that a targeted, relevance-driven approach often outperforms broad, generic strategies. By narrowing down service areas and honing in on core offerings, businesses can communicate their expertise more effectively to Google—and to potential customers—building stronger local authority. It’s interesting to see the rapid boost in rankings within just two weeks; this underscores how impactful minor adjustments can be when aligned with a clear, focused strategy. For anyone looking to optimize their local presence, it’s worth evaluating current subcategories and service areas to ensure they accurately reflect core strengths and target audiences. Sometimes, less really is more in the quest for visibility.
This case study underscores a fundamental principle often overlooked in local SEO: relevance trumps breadth. By narrowing focus to core services and primary service areas, businesses can better communicate their core offerings to both search engines and potential customers. It’s important to remember that Google’s algorithms prioritize proximity and relevance, so overextending into unrelated categories or multiple areas can dilute authority signals and hamper rankings. Additionally, leveraging structured data markup to clearly define service locations and specialties can further reinforce local relevance. Regularly auditing and refining these elements ensures alignment with your core business objectives and can lead to more sustainable and meaningful visibility in local search results.
