In the ever-evolving landscape of digital marketing, local businesses must employ innovative strategies to enhance their online presence. Recently, I undertook a project aimed at improving the visibility of a roofing company in a moderate competitive market in the United States. Despite having a well-optimized long-form article ranking at the top for the query “best roofing services [city],” the business was not being featured in Google’s AI Overview. This article will outline the strategic steps taken to overcome this challenge, as well as insights for future implementations.

Identifying the Challenge

After analyzing the rankings, it became evident that our content was unique in terms of referencing the client. The top-ranking articles on Google lacked any mentions of the roofing business, creating a gap in the consensus signals needed for elevated visibility in AI-generated overviews. We needed to establish a broader web presence that included mentions of the client across various platforms.

Implementing a Multi-Channel Strategy

To address the visibility gap, we executed a multi-faceted approach that included the following elements:

  1. Content Diversification: We published supporting articles across various platforms such as Medium, Notion, Google Sites, and Blogger. These articles were strategically tailored with slight topic variations, including titles like “What to Look for When Choosing a Roofing Service in [city].” Each piece highlighted multiple roofing services while featuring our client prominently at the top.

  2. Link Building: To enhance the authority of the supporting content, we built tier-2 links directed to these articles, improving their chances of ranking and being indexed by search engines.

  3. Video Marketing: Alongside written content, we created a short promotional video that was repurposed for multiple social media platforms, including TikTok and Instagram, to increase engagement and visibility.

  4. Collaborative Outreach: We contacted other websites that were already ranking for the relevant keywords. Thankfully, two of these sites agreed to include contextual mentions of our client in exchange for a fee, bolstering our client’s online credibility.

Results and Conclusions

Approximately 22 days after deploying this comprehensive strategy, the roofing business began appearing as the top option in Google’s AI Overview for our targeted search query. This positive outcome illustrates the importance of accumulating consensus across various domains and content formats, significantly enhancing the likelihood of inclusion in AI-generated summaries.

Currently, I am applying a similar approach for a plumbing client in a highly competitive market as part of a white-label partnership with another agency. However, initial results have shown minimal improvement, prompting me to experiment with public relations strategies to increase authority and visibility.

In conclusion, establishing a robust online presence that encompasses diverse content types and collaborative efforts is critical for local businesses seeking to achieve recognition in AI Overviews.
