Lessons from an $428 Million Paycheck: Noah KaganΓÇÖs Entrepreneurial Journey
Eleven years ago, I received a life-changing lesson that cost $428 millionΓÇöwhen I was abruptly fired from Facebook as employee #30. This unexpected setback became a pivotal moment in my career, shaping my future endeavors and teaching me invaluable lessons about resilience, innovation, and persistence. Today, I want to share my story and insights with you, and how it led me to build two multi-million dollar companies, Sumo.com and AppSumo, both of which I started leveraging platforms like Reddit.
Meeting the Early Challenges and Opportunities
My professional journey began at Intel, where I gained foundational experience in the tech industry. Later, I became the fourth employee at Mint.com, a successful personal finance startup, but it was my time at Facebook that proved to be a defining chapter. As employee #30, I believed I was on the brink of a monumental careerΓÇöuntil I was unexpectedly let go. That moment was painful but served as a crucial learning experience, highlighting the importance of adaptability and seizing new opportunities.

Turning Adversity into Entrepreneurial Success
While the setback was significant, it fueled my desire to create impactful tools and businesses. I launched Sumo, a suite of free tools designed to help entrepreneurs grow their websites and email lists, and AppSumo, a platform that offers lifetime deals on the best software for entrepreneurs╬ô├ç├╢akin to a “Groupon for Geeks.”
Both ventures stemmed from my passion to empower other entrepreneurs and sharing my expertise on marketing, business growth, and productivity. Starting on platforms like Reddit, I connected directly with my audience, fostering a community of action takers who are passionate about building their own success stories.
Building a Community and Giving Back
As a longtime Redditor, I started AppSumo on the platform to engage with entrepreneurs and share knowledge. To celebrate the community’s energy, I hosted an Ask Me Anything (AMA), where I discussed topics ranging from starting and scaling businesses to overcoming challenges like depression and maintaining productivity.
My goal is to help as many people as possible love their work and take meaningful actions toward their goals. I genuinely love
