Trapped in family duty

Navigating Family Obligations and Personal Aspirations: A Young Professional’s Dilemma

Entering the world of work can often come with unexpected responsibilities, especially when family is involved. As a 22-year-old who has dedicated three years to my father’s business, I find myself at a crossroads between familial expectations and personal ambitions.

Three years ago, what began as a temporary role to support my father while he addressed a pressing legal matter, was meant to be just that—temporary. At the time, I was on the cusp of starting university, and I was very clear about my intention to leave the business once the situation was resolved.

Fast forward to today: the legal issue is largely behind us and my father is gradually resuming his duties within the business. I have since enrolled in a blended-learning program, which presents the flexibility I need to juggle both work and study. My passion lies in software development, and I am eager to embark on a career in tech. Despite making considerable progress in my studies, my father seems hesitant to relinquish my role in the business. He has even put forth the idea that I should take over the enterprise, a prospect that I find hard to fathom given my ambitions lie elsewhere.

Presently, much of my life revolves around ensuring the smooth operation of our family business, and it’s the only professional experience I’ve had. This predicament leaves me torn between the fear of disappointing my family and the desire to chase my own dreams.

The question remains: should I continue asserting my wish for independence, or am I being naive in doing so?
