Navigating Family Business Dynamics: My Journey in the Pest & Wildlife Industry
Taking part in a family business can be a profoundly rewarding yet challenging experience. My story is a testament to navigating the complexities of working alongside a parent while aspiring to modernize and grow a company. Here’s an overview of my journey since joining my father’s pest and wildlife business shortly after high school graduation.
The Beginning: From Rough Patches to Business Partners
My father founded his pest and wildlife control company approximately eight and a half years ago. Despite a turbulent relationship during my early years, things began to improve around the ninth grade. When I was about 13, my father shared his entrepreneurial plan with my brother and me. Although my brother chose not to involve himself, I committed to joining the company.
Entering the business was not a straightforward decision for my father. He was clear about his hesitance to expand or hire additional staff. However, over time, I have carved out a crucial role for myself, taking charge of pricing structures and handling all proposals for new projects, whether they involve commercial accounts, wildlife management, or pest issues. My efforts have expanded a modest recurring revenue to a diverse client base with substantial growth.
Modernization and Training: The Road to Expansion
An area of significant interest to me is expanding into wildlife management, which requires specialized certifications and training. With hardly any competition in our state, I see a valuable opportunity to pioneer this niche before others catch on.
Despite recognizing the need for innovation, disagreements with my father often arise, particularly regarding our operational methods. He prefers traditional, paper-based systems instead of embracing new technology. While I have successfully implemented spreadsheets and electronic documentation, he remains resistant. However, experience has taught me that some of my ideas become more appealing once he encounters challenges resulting from not adopting them earlier.
Preparing for the Future: A Leadership Transition
With my father’s intent for me to take over the business in the next few years, possibly as soon as he turns 55, several concerns have emerged. His approach to customer interactions and road etiquette sometimes jeopardizes our professional reputation, requiring me to occasionally intervene. Moreover, his reluctance to engage in financial details, which are overseen by my stepmother, could prove challenging.
As I prepare to lead the business, I often reflect on these experiences and the skills I must develop. I’m passionate about our company’s potential and am committed to evolving our practices to ensure future success.
