I find myself at a crossroads as I contemplate transitioning from hobbyist to business owner. After recently losing my job, I have been inspired to turn my passion for candle and soap making into a professional endeavor. Many friends and family members have encouraged me to pursue this path, especially after they received delightful gift baskets filled with my handmade creations.
Through some preliminary research, I’ve gathered information on raw material costs and discovered various B2B marketplaces like Amazon and Alibaba International that could provide competitive pricing for bulk purchases. However, I am facing a significant hurdle: I lack any formal knowledge of running a business. While there are countless resources available online, I would genuinely appreciate insights from experienced small business owners regarding what to expect on this journey. If you had to pinpoint the three most critical aspects of starting a business, what would they be?
Additionally, I’m considering the possibility of forming a partnership with a friend who has expressed interest in collaborating. However, I am cautious, as I understand that merging friendship with business can sometimes lead to complications. My friend possesses marketing knowledge, which could complement my focus on product development, allowing us to bounce ideas off one another. Still, there’s a part of me that worries about jeopardizing our friendship.
On the other hand, I have my husband, who is skeptical about this venture and believes it might not succeed. Given these dynamics, I am seeking genuine, candid advice from those who have successfully turned their hobbies into thriving businesses.
