Considering Entrepreneurship: A Young Barber’s Dilemma
As I reflect on my journey so far, I find myself at a crossroads in my career. Since I was just 13, I have dedicated myself to the art of barbering, working approximately 45 hours each week. Fast forward to today, at 18 years old, I have amassed five years of experience and successfully transitioned from providing free haircuts in my early teens to becoming a licensed professional at 16.
During my apprenticeship at 15, my mentors recognized my natural talent, helping me refine my skills and eliminate some of my less-than-ideal habits. Throughout high school, I managed to balance my work and studies effectively by opting for a less rigorous academic track, allowing me to complete my coursework during school hours.
Now, having graduated and built a solid client base within my local Muslim community, I find myself contemplating a significant step: launching my own barbershop. With $80,000 saved and the security of living with my parents, my father encourages me to seize this opportunity. Furthermore, my schedule is always packed, often booked out for two weeks in advance, indicating a strong demand for my services.
Despite this promising foundation, I am wrestling with doubts about whether to take the plunge into entrepreneurship at such a young age. Should I venture out on my own now, or should I continue to gain experience and increase my savings by working additional hours at my current shop for a few more years?
This decision weighs heavily on my mind. While the prospects of owning a business are enticing, I wonder if it might be wiser to gain further industry insights and potentially save more funds before embarking on this journey. What do you think? Is this the right moment for me to become a business owner, or is there merit in gaining more experience in a traditional barbershop setting?
I welcome insights from those who have navigated a similar path or have valuable advice on entrepreneurship at a young age.
