Initially, everything appeared to be in order. However, a comprehensive analysis revealed a much different story, with a final score of 34 out of 100 across five critical online visibility signals.

Google Business Profile: A Missed Opportunity (48/100)

During the audit, it became clear that the plumber’s Google Business Profile was lacking vital components. Not only was there no business description present, but the profile also included only three photos, and the last post dated back eight months. Moreover, the products and services section was entirely neglected. Each of these aspects serves as important ranking signals that collectively hindered his visibility in local search results.

Search Visibility: Hidden in Plain Sight (12/100)

I conducted searches for local plumbers across various platforms and found that our plumber did not appear in any results. This was particularly striking when compared to a competitor, who, despite having a lower reputation (3.9 stars), had a significantly stronger online presence. This competitor was actively receiving calls, highlighting how online signals can dramatically impact visibility regardless of actual service quality.

Directory Citations: The Importance of Accuracy (35/100)

An examination of directory citations showed that while the plumber was listed on Yell, the phone number provided was incorrect. Alarmingly, he was not represented on major platforms such as Checkatrade, Apple Maps, or Bing Places. Discrepancies in these listings can lead search engines to doubt the legitimacy of a business, ultimately affecting its search rankings. Consistency across platforms is essential for credibility.

Review Management: Quality Over Quantity (41/100)

The plumber had accumulated 23 reviews with an average rating of 4.3 stars. While this may seem respectable, only four of these reviews had received responses, and there was no ongoing system in place for generating new feedback. The frequency of reviews, known as review velocity, is just as important as the score itself in influencing potential customers’ decisions.

Schema Markup: A Critical Oversight (0/100)

Perhaps the most glaring issue was the absence of schema markup on the plumber’s website. This type of coding helps search engines understand the specifics of a business, including services offered and geographic location. Unfortunately, many tradespeople are unaware of schema markup’s impact, which can significantly restrict their visibility in search results.

What surprised me the most throughout this auditing process was the disconnect between the quality of service a tradesperson offers and their online visibility – or lack thereof. A skilled tradesperson can remain largely invisible in the digital landscape while less qualified competitors thrive, all due to online signals that go unnoticed by many.

The solutions to these problems may appear complex, but they are fundamentally straightforward and manageable. Ensuring a robust online presence requires attention to detail and consistency, even if the effects are often invisible to the untrained eye.
