Navigating the Challenges of Managing Multiple Websites Targeting Similar Keywords

In the realm of digital marketing, managing multiple websites under the same company umbrella can be a double-edged sword. Recently, our team has encountered a particularly interesting scenario within our multi-site management strategy, prompting us to delve deeper into the intricacies of search engine optimization (SEO) performance across these platforms.

The Current Landscape

Our company oversees five distinct websites, all of which have a solid history—some operating for years. As part of our ongoing analysis, we observed that two of these websites are experiencing a boost in search rankings and organic visibility. In contrast, the others have shown minimal progress over the same period. Notably, the websites that performed well previously engaged in modest backlink campaigns, yet these efforts were not aggressive or sustained.

Meanwhile, the underperforming sites received consistent technical SEO and on-page enhancements, but these improvements did not yield comparable results. Despite thorough examinations using Google Search Console, we have not identified any pressing issues such as manual penalties or indexing errors. Our on-page optimizations—covering title tags, meta descriptions, image alt attributes, heading structures, internal linking, and other SEO fundamentals—seem robust, leaving us to wonder what could be causing this disparity in performance.

Challenges with Niche Content

Operating in a niche industry poses additional challenges. The variety of topics available for content creation is somewhat limited, with most new entries being reports on completed projects, case studies, product updates, and industry news. This focused approach can inadvertently lead to overlapping keywords across our websites, creating a competitive landscape where multiple sites vie for the same search terms.

Interestingly, some of our best-performing websites share the same Google Search Console account as those that lag behind, raising questions about whether this commonality could affect visibility. Given that multiple properties are targeting similar products and services, we can sometimes find our own websites competing against each other in search results.

Competitor Analysis

Adding further complexity is the relative inactivity of our competitors in the SEO arena. Despite a lack of new content, link-building efforts, or major website updates from them, we’ve observed that their search rankings remain stable. This situation leads us to ponder several critical questions:

  1. Do Multiple Websites Stifle Each Other’s Growth?
Can having several websites under one organization restrict individual performance when targeting similar keywords?

  2. Does Google Favor Unique Domains?
Is it the case that Google may limit visibility for multiple domains that compete for the same search intent from a single entity?

  3. Authority Persistence Over Competition
Can a competitor maintain a solid ranking due solely to historical authority and backlink strength, even without current SEO endeavors?

  4. Impact of Backlink Campaigns
Is it typical for a few backlinks to create such stark performance differences between multiple sites?

  5. Search Console Considerations
Are there SEO implications tied to managing several websites under the same Google Search Console account?

Seeking Insights

We are eager to explore these questions further and would appreciate insights from those who have navigated similar complexities. As we continue our SEO journey, establishing effective strategies to maximize the potential of each website while minimizing inter-site competition remains a priority. Your experiences and advice would undoubtedly be beneficial as we seek to unlock opportunities for enhanced visibility in this competitive landscape. Thank you for your contributions!
