How Charging a $50 Fee Upfront Helped Me Reduce Unproductive Leads by 80%

As a solo app developer, I’ve continually sought ways to optimize my client onboarding process and focus my time on projects with genuine potential. Traditionally, my approach involved offering a free 30-minute introductory call, followed by potential proposals and project negotiations. However, this often resulted in a low conversion rate—around 20%—and significant time spent on exploratory calls that rarely progressed.

To address this challenge, I implemented a new process: requiring a $50 fee to begin the discovery phase. Clients are directed to a dedicated page where they make the payment and fill out a structured intake form. This form enables me to receive a comprehensive written brief, replacing the scattered notes typically taken during meetings. If the project proceeds, the $50 is credited towards the overall cost.

The outcome has been significant. Each lead now demonstrates a higher level of commitment and seriousness. The typical “just exploring” inquiries have largely disappeared, allowing me to allocate my time more effectively. Instead of conducting lengthy Zoom calls, I review detailed written briefs, which streamline my evaluation process and improve communication clarity.

Interestingly, I anticipated some pushback—many assume paying upfront might deter potential clients. However, that concern proved unfounded. The clients willing to pay the $50 fee are usually those who are serious about moving forward; those unwilling to invest even a small amount at this stage are unlikely to commit to larger projects, such as an $8,000 build.
