From Engineering to Entrepreneurship: My Journey of Building an Organic Kidswear Brand from India to Canada
Hello everyone,
After years of lurking and observing this community, I finally feel ready to share my story. It’s been quite a journey, marked by bold decisions, new challenges, and meaningful learning experiences. I hope my story can inspire others contemplating a similar path or seeking insights into building a consumer brand from the ground up.
The Catalyst: Concern for My Daughter’s Skin
Approximately two years ago, I noticed my daughter developing skin reactions from her regular clothing. While nothing severe, it was enough to prompt extensive research into what goes into children’s apparel. I discovered that many everyday clothes contain formaldehyde finishes, azo dyes, heavy metals—substances that are entirely legal and prevalent in most children’s clothing today.
Despite my stable career as an engineering manager in Canada, these revelations sparked a deep sense of concern. I couldn’t simply switch to another brand if it meant exposing her to potentially harmful chemicals, especially when the “organic” options available at the time were either prohibitively expensive or lacked credible certifications.
A Bold Decision: Moving to India to Build an Ethical Kidswear Brand
Driven by a desire to provide safer clothing for my daughter, I made the unconventional decision to relocate to India, specifically to Tirupur—the renowned garment manufacturing hub. My goal was clear: to create an organic kidswear brand rooted in transparency, safety, and quality.
Starting from scratch, I established a GOTS-certified facility, sourcing clean cotton and eliminating all harmful substances. The target demographic was children aged 2 to 6. The journey was far from easy. Over approximately 11 months, I faced rejection after rejection—more than 100 manufacturers turned down my vision—until I finally found a partner willing to work with me. It’s important to note, I entered this industry with zero prior garment manufacturing experience; I was simply an engineer and a parent who couldn’t accept the status quo.
Building the Foundation: Manufacturing and Growth
Once manufacturing was sorted, the real learning began. Developing a reliable supply chain, ensuring strict adherence to organic standards, and maintaining quality—these challenges were significant but ultimately rewarding. Earlier this year, I launched the brand in India, and the response has been incredibly encouraging.
Expanding Back Home: Bringing the Brand to Canada
Now, I am preparing to introduce the brand to Canada, with a targeted launch scheduled for mid-June. This full-circle moment—starting in Canada, building the brand in India, and now returning home—is both surreal and fulfilling. It feels like I’ve merged my professional background with my personal mission, creating something meaningful for families seeking safer, truly organic children’s clothing.
Sharing the Journey and Seeking Community Insights
I’m not here to pitch or promote—my intention is to share my experience as a first-time founder navigating uncharted territory. I believe in the power of community and learning from those who have walked similar paths.
If you’ve built a consumer brand, particularly in the children’s market, I would love to hear your insights. Specifically, I’m eager to know what you wish you knew earlier in your journey. Additionally, I’m happy to answer questions about manufacturing in India, organic certification processes, or any challenges related to creating transparent, safe apparel for kids.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I look forward to engaging with this community and continuing to learn and grow.
Warm regards,
