Navigating Business Challenges: A Small Café’s Year of Growth and Unexpected Setbacks
Starting a small business requires resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to learn from each experience. Over the past year, I’ve been operating a café, and I’m proud to share that we’ve reached a significant milestone: the first profitable month. Building on this momentum, we anticipate further financial growth as we continue to refine our operations, minimize waste, control costs, and update our menu offerings. It’s been a journey of hands-on learning, and finally, the fruits of our efforts are beginning to emerge.
However, despite these positive developments, we encountered unforeseen challenges with our landlord. When we initially leased the space, the requirement for three months’ rent upfront created a financial burden that I was unable to meet immediately, resulting in accumulated arrears amounting to thousands of pounds. Over the past four months, I have worked tirelessly to reduce this debt through consistent and ad-hoc payments, demonstrating our commitment to settling our obligations.
Recently, the situation escalated when the landlord invoked the forfeiture clause in our lease, resulting in the removal of the business’s keys by a bailiff. Fortunately, I was present to witness this action and was able to communicate directly with the landlord afterward. Through prompt dialogue, I was able to retrieve the keys and ensure that we could resume trading without disruption.
While I understand the landlord’s position and recognize the importance of rent payments, I am frustrated that the actions taken threaten our progress just as we are beginning to turn a corner. I was planning to make a significant payment after my upcoming VAT bill, but the recent eviction attempt has created a sense of urgency and uncertainty.
At this stage, I am seeking guidance on how best to proceed. Should I be transparent by sharing our complete financial accounts to demonstrate our progress and commitment? It seems the focus is primarily on the outstanding debt, but I need time to reduce it, and time feels increasingly scarce.
If anyone with experience in small business lease negotiations or dispute resolution can offer advice, I would greatly appreciate your insights. Our goal is to find a viable path forward that allows us to stabilize, grow, and ultimately succeed.
Thank you for taking the time to read about my journey. I look forward to any guidance you may have.
