Stay Vigilant: Why You Should Be Wary of Unsolicited Calls from Your Bank
In today’s digital age, financial scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, making it essential for business owners and individuals alike to remain vigilant. Recently, I experienced a situation that underscores the importance of skepticism when receiving unexpected calls claiming to be from your bank.
A Call from an Impersonator: What Happened
The call appeared legitimate at first glance. It arrived on our main business line, displayed the bank’s name and customer service number. The caller identified himself as a representative of our bank and asked to speak with someone from “accounts payable.” This immediately struck me as unusual, since I am part of the accounts payable department.
The caller proceeded to mention that there had been multiple attempted withdrawals from our bank account directed towards an individual named “[Insert Generic Name Here],” and asked whether these transactions were authorized.
I responded that they were not. The caller then claimed he would initiate a fraud investigation and inquired whether I preferred receiving the case number via phone or email. I opted for email, to ensure I had a record of the communication. Subsequently, he requested sensitive information, including the last digits of our employer identification number (EIN) or the banking login name.
When I asked for clarification regarding which account he was referencing, I explained that we have multiple accounts and needed the specific account number. Sensing something was amiss, the caller abruptly ended the call.
The Importance of Due Diligence
After hanging up, I took immediate steps to report the incident to our bank, providing them with an audio recording of the suspicious call. This experience reinforces a critical lesson: always approach unexpected bank communications with suspicion.
How to Protect Yourself and Your Business
-
Verify the caller’s identity: Always hang up and call back using official contact details obtained directly from your bank’s website or your bank statements.
-
Be cautious with sharing sensitive information: Never provide account numbers, login details, or personal identifiers over the phone unless you are certain of the caller’s identity.
-
Watch for red flags: Unsolicited requests for confidential information, pressure to act quickly, and vague references to account issues are common scam tactics.
-
Report suspicious activity: Notify your bank immediately if you suspect malicious activity or if you receive unanticipated calls claiming to be from your financial institution.
Final Word
Bank representatives will typically not ask for sensitive information over the phone unexpectedly. If something feels off, trust your instincts. Verify any suspicious communication through official channels to safeguard your company’s assets.
Stay informed, stay secure.
