The Value of Balance and Humility: Lessons from an Old Farmer’s Wisdom
Almost two decades ago, I found myself at a men’s retreat alongside a business partner, just before embarking on a new venture. During our stay, we encountered an unlikely source of profound wisdom—an elderly farmer who, out of the blue, sat beside us and began a simple but impactful conversation.
This farmer, dressed in dirty coveralls and worn-out boots, possessed a wealth of experience and humility. Among his words, one quote has resonated with me ever since: “I never have seen a bird dig a six foot deep hole to find a worm, but I also never saw a worm jump in a bird’s mouth.” This remark encapsulates the importance of patience, effort, and the understanding that opportunity often favors those who work diligently and empathetically, without forcing outcomes.
This encounter served as a pivotal reminder that while hard work and determination are essential, they should be balanced with patience and humility. Success does not necessarily require relentless pushing; sometimes, the world responds more kindly when we operate with a sense of calm and balance.
Interestingly, I later learned that the farmer was a man of substantial means, worth high seven figures and owning much of the land and the camp where we stayed. His humble demeanor and simple words left a lasting impression on me, illustrating that true wealth often lies in humility and a grounded perspective.
As we move through our days, striving for success and growth, let us remember the importance of balance. Working diligently is vital, but so is recognizing the value of patience, humility, and respecting the natural flow of life.
Seize each day with purpose—and do so with a balanced spirit, mindful of the simpler lessons that nature and experience teach us.
Remember, success is not just about the destination but also about the humility and balance we carry along the way.
