My experience with 3 very different business ideas

Insights from Experiencing Three Distinct Business Ventures

Over the past eighteen months, I have explored and tested three fundamentally different side business ideas. Sharing my experiences can offer valuable lessons for aspiring entrepreneurs and those considering diversifying their efforts.

  1. Developing a No-Code Productivity Application

Using Bubble, I created a straightforward habit tracker aimed at helping users establish routines. Although I attracted approximately 200 signups through Reddit and Twitter, the conversion to paying customers was limited—only about three individuals subscribed at $5 per month. The high churn rate suggested that addressing minor inconveniences might not be sufficient; successful engagement often requires solving a genuine problem or fostering strong behavioral change.

  1. Creating Hand-Made Soy Candles

Initially, candle making was a rewarding hobby. I crafted customized scents and sold them at local markets. However, scaling production posed significant challenges. Mixing large batches of wax in my kitchen was labor-intensive, labeling consumed considerable time, and profit margins dwindled after accounting for materials and labor. Additionally, the competitive landscape has become saturated, with many sellers offering similar products.

  1. Reselling Home Essentials

My current venture involves sourcing small batches (50–100 units) of practical products—such as home decor, reusable bags, and minimalist tools—from reputable suppliers on Alibaba with Trade Assurance. I personally test each product, design simple branded packaging, and handle shipping directly from home. This approach doesn’t rely on viral social media trends but emphasizes consistent quality and reliable delivery.

Recently, this business achieved $1,200 in revenue for a single month, with repeat customers indicating ongoing interest. While it’s not devoid of effort, this model offers a sustainable path, at least for now, as I continue to evaluate potential opportunities for growth or alternative ideas.

These experiences underscore the importance of understanding market needs, the challenges of scaling different types of businesses, and the value of persistence in entrepreneurship.

  • Thank you for sharing such a nuanced reflection on your entrepreneurial journey. Your experience highlights a critical aspect often overlooked: the importance of aligning business models with inherent scalability and market saturation. For instance, handmade products like candles, while rewarding on a personal level, often face diminishing returns due to labor intensity and saturated markets—an issue common among artisanal crafts.

Conversely, your pivot towards reselling curated home essentials exemplifies a scalable, lean approach that leverages global supply chains while maintaining quality control—a model that can adapt quickly to market demand. This aligns with broader e-commerce trends emphasizing efficient sourcing, branding simplicity, and reliable fulfillment. It also showcases how understanding core customer needs and building trust through quality can foster repeat business, a vital component for sustainable growth.

Your insight about the challenges of converting initial interest into paying customers, especially in no-code app ventures, resonates with the widespread difficulty in creating genuine value that drives behavioral change. Success in such spaces often hinges on deep user insights and iterative refinement to address real pain points effectively.

Overall, your journey underscores a fundamental entrepreneurial lesson: adaptability, market understanding, and consistent value delivery are key to navigating diverse business landscapes. It’s inspiring to see a pragmatic approach balanced with resilience—traits that are essential for long-term success in any venture.
