How Google Reviews Transformed My Approach to Business and Personal Conduct
In the world of small business ownership, maintaining a positive reputation is paramount. I run an IT consulting firm with a team of ten employees. We’ve been operating successfully for over a decade, and the majority of our new clients come from inbound inquiries. However, about a year ago, our reputation was unexpectedly challenged by two 1-star Google reviews that appeared almost simultaneously.
These reviews were strikingly similar and directly named me, accusing me of rudeness and a lack of concern for customers. Naturally, receiving such negative feedback was upsetting, especially given that our overall Google review count was around fifty. Every low rating impacted our overall score and public perception.
Initially, I believed these reviews might not be from genuine customers but perhaps from someone with a grudge—an adversary I had inadvertently offended. I made multiple attempts to work with Google to have the reviews removed, but despite flagging them and reaching out through various channels, the platform declined to remove them. In response, I publicly acknowledged the reviews, clarifying that we had no record of the individuals and inviting them to contact us directly to resolve any issues.
Throughout this process, I found myself reminiscing and trying to pinpoint who might have left these reviews—was it a solicitor I was curt with? A delivery person I snapped at? A contractor I dismissed? A marketing partner I fired prematurely? The speculation consumed my thoughts, and I struggled to move past it.
Interestingly, the experience has had a profound, unexpected effect on me. Over the past year, I have become significantly more courteous and professional in my daily interactions. Understanding that any client or partner can leave a negative review with little recourse has made me more thoughtful about my words and actions. I now approach every conversation with patience and professionalism—no hanging up on a pushy salesperson, no berating vendors, and no emotional grudges when parting ways with collaborators.
This transformation has been positive. I believe I’ve improved as a person and feel more at peace in my professional dealings. Yet, beneath this personal growth lies a stark reality: the immense power wielded by review platforms, especially Google. It’s unsettling that a single corporate entity controls a dominant portion of search, advertising, and reputation management online. Their influence can make or break businesses and directly impact the livelihoods of countless entrepreneurs.
The takeaway is clear—while the accountability review sites encourage transparency, they also expose small business owners to significant vulnerabilities. Navigating this landscape requires a delicate balance between professionalism and resilience, recognizing the power dynamics at play in the digital age.
