Celebrating One Year of Success: Reflecting on My Journey as a Game Store Owner
One year ago, I took a leap into the unknown by opening my own game store, focusing primarily on Magic: The Gathering, RPGs, and board games. Equipped with just over $12,000 in cash and approximately $11,000 worth of inventory, I established my business in a slightly challenging neighborhood, operating without any employees and sourcing all materials secondhand.
The opening month was promising, with sales reaching nearly $4,700. However, the journey was far from smooth. During that first year, I faced a series of obstacles, including a local incident involving the neighboring dojo, which was falsely accused of inappropriate behavior, adding unnecessary tension to the area. Additionally, I experienced setbacks such as theft by my first employee, miscalculations in inventory purchasing, conflicts with distributors, and the difficult task of firing staff members when necessary.
Throughout this tumultuous year, I found incredible value in the supportive community of fellow entrepreneurs and enthusiasts. Today, I am proud to host a barbecue for 70 of our loyal customers—an event that underscores the strong community we’ve built.
