Understanding Common SEO Pitfalls: Insights from Auditing Over 30 Small Business Websites

Drawing from my experience in search engine optimization (SEO), having audited more than 30 small business websites and managing four of my own, I’ve identified recurring mistakes that significantly hinder Google rankings. Orphan pages—those without inbound links—are effectively invisible to Google, reducing their chances of ranking well.

Some businesses attempt quick wins by purchasing backlinks from inexpensive services like Fiverr, often offering thousands of links for a small fee. These backlinks usually originate from spammy directories or low-authority sites flagged by Google, rendering them ineffective at best and detrimental at worst, leading to penalties. Instead, focus on acquiring backlinks that actually drive traffic and come from reputable sources.

Creating numerous pages with minimal or identical content—often through automated tools like ChatGPT—can do more harm than good. These low-value pages can trigger manual actions from Google, causing a significant drop in organic traffic that may last several months. Quality should always take precedence over quantity; aim for rich, unique content that provides value to users.
