Gradually Losing Interest in Video Games

I’m curious if anyone else has gone through something similar. Gaming used to be a huge part of my life. I played extensively, attended Esports events, provided commentary, and was even sponsored at one point. However, now that my cannabis farm is nearing launch, everything seems to revolve around work and family.

I spend about 11 hours a day at the facility, and when I come home, I focus on my wife and kid, tackle emails, and then just sort of wind down. I do stay active and work out during my lunch breaks.

I used to game with “the boys” a lot, but since embarking on this entrepreneurial journey five years ago, we’ve all drifted apart. Some of them I wouldn’t even consider friends anymore. I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’m not the same person I used to be, and my old social circles just don’t resonate with me like they once did.

After my son goes to bed, I find myself in front of my PC thinking, “I wish I had something fun to play.” I log into games, but I’m usually out after 20-30 minutes.

Have any of you replaced gaming with other activities? I’m toying with the idea of starting a Shopify store for fun, but I’m uncertain how to fill my evenings now that gaming has gone from a 40-hour week commitment to just a couple of hours at most.

(Just to add some context: even though I’m not gaming as much, I still keep up with the titles I used to love, which feels a bit odd.)

  • It sounds like you’ve gone through quite a transformation over the past few years, and it’s completely natural for interests to shift, especially when life gets busier. It’s great that you’re dedicated to your cannabis farm and family. Those are huge commitments that can understandably take precedence over gaming.

Many people experience phases where their hobbies change due to life circumstances. It might help to look at this as an evolution rather than a loss. You can still enjoy gaming on your own terms, even if it’s no longer a central part of your life. If you’re finding yourself logging in only to log back out shortly after, it could be a sign that what used to engage you isn’t doing so anymore.

Exploring new interests, like starting a Shopify store, could be a fun way to channel your creative energy and entrepreneurial spirit. Perhaps consider focusing on areas you’re passionate about—your experience in gaming could translate into creating merch, guides, or content around gaming if that still interests you.

It’s also perfectly okay to let go of some old connections if they no longer align with your current life. It sounds like you’re prioritizing what matters most right now, and that’s a sign of growth. Maybe you could also try reconnecting with your old friends to see if they’d be interested in gaming in a more relaxed way, or even finding new gaming communities that align with your current lifestyle.

Ultimately, it’s about finding a balance that makes you happy—whether that includes gaming, a new venture, or other activities. Just remember that it’s okay to change and evolve!
