I am so sick of 9-5

I’m really feeling fed up with the 9-5 grind. I know I have so much potential and a strong hustle mentality within me. Before Covid, I was living in China, running my own small business that brought in nearly $10,000 a month on good months. I also had an English teaching job that paid really well, and even as a student, I enjoyed financial freedom—covering my tuition and supporting my family.

Since moving to North America, I’ve been stuck in the 9-5 routine, and it makes me feel so limited. I’ve been trying to come up with new ideas, but nothing seems to click. I’ve been working in construction, hoping to climb the ladder, but I often feel underestimated and am not getting the higher-paying opportunities I deserve. It’s really frustrating, and I’m at a loss for what to do next. I crave the freedom to pursue my own ventures.

I recently accepted a new role, and honestly, I already dread it before even starting. I don’t want to appear ungrateful; it’s just that I feel completely out of my element in the job market.

Any advice or words of motivation would mean a lot. What pushed you to let go of fear and chase after something new, even when the path wasn’t clear? I feel pretty defeated right now.

  • It sounds like you’re going through a really tough time, and it’s completely understandable to feel frustrated, especially after experiencing the freedom and success you had in China. Transitioning to a new country and a different work culture can be challenging, and it’s natural to feel a bit lost.

First, take a moment to recognize everything you’ve accomplished already. Running a successful small business and supporting your family while studying is no small feat. That hustle mentality you have is still in you; it just needs the right outlet.

Here are a few ideas that might help reignite that entrepreneurial spirit and guide you toward a path you find fulfilling:

    1. Reflect on Your Skills: List out all the skills you gained from your previous business and teaching roles. Is there a way to leverage those in a new venture? Maybe you can consider offering online classes or tutoring, which could help you reconnect with what you love.

    2. Explore Freelance Options: If starting a full business feels overwhelming, consider freelancing or taking side gigs in something you enjoy. This could bring in some extra income while giving you a chance to test the waters.

    3. Network and Connect: Reach out to other entrepreneurs or groups in your area. Sharing experiences and learning from others can inspire you and might open up new opportunities. Platforms like LinkedIn, Meetup, or local entrepreneur groups can be useful.

    4. Set Small Goals: It can feel daunting when you think about making a big change. Try setting small, achievable goals that gradually lead you toward your ultimate goal of escaping the 9-5 grind. Celebrate the little wins along the way!

    5. Take Care of Your Mindset: It’s easy to feel defeated, but remember that every entrepreneur has faced setbacks. Consider finding a mentor or coach who can help you navigate through these feelings and put things into perspective.

    6. Be Patient With Yourself: Finding the right path takes time. It’s okay to feel uncertain. Allow yourself space to explore different ideas without the pressure of immediate success.

Most importantly, remind yourself why you want to break free from the 9-5. Keep that passion at the forefront of your mind and use it as a motivator to push through the tough days. You have that fire in you; sometimes, it just takes a little time and experimentation to fan the flames. You got this!
