After dedicating over fifteen years to my current employer, the conversation about purchasing the business has been on the table for the past four years. My commitment has been unwavering; I’ve complied with every request and completed various steps my boss set forth to demonstrate my readiness to take the reins. However, despite my diligent efforts, I find myself feeling increasingly trapped in a cycle of uncertainty regarding the future of the company.

The Challenge of Uncertainty

During my tenure, I have become the most senior team member, deeply involved in all facets of the business operations, with the exception of financial management. A few years ago, my boss, who owns the company, shared his plans for retirement and expressed a desire to sell the business to me. Naturally, I was enthusiastic about the opportunity. However, since that initial announcement, there has been little to no progress.

Throughout these four years, I’ve been tasked with completing various steps to “prove my eligibility” to purchase the business. These steps have included personal financial evaluations, saving toward a substantial down payment, attending business courses, and mentoring newer employees to lessen my boss’s reliance on his position. I have completed each requirement promptly, yet, I still lack access to any significant financial information. He has withheld billing details, pricing, timelines, and even the terms of the potential sale.

Despite the extensive nature of this commitment, I continue to be left in limbo, making major life decisions—such as relocating my family while being the sole breadwinner—based on a future that feels increasingly uncertain. This situation has taken a toll on my family dynamics, as my wife, a key professional in her field, is awaiting the right moment to transition her career while juggling our responsibilities at home.

The Strain of Stagnation

With all these factors in play, I’ve begun to contemplate my future outside of this potential transaction. While I still deeply respect my boss and am eager to support him, the prolonged waiting and uncertainty are becoming difficult to bear. Adding to the complexity, my boss has recently faced health challenges, which naturally take precedence in his life and may be influencing the pace of these discussions.
