Expanding Horizons: Successfully Acquiring a Second Physiotherapy Practice
As business owners passionate about growth, my partner and I are excited to embark on a new venture: the acquisition of a second physiotherapy practice in a neighboring town. This opportunity aligns perfectly with our long-term goal of expanding our services, and it comes with the added benefit of taking over an already established practice staffed with five employees. This move is strategically significant, as it allows us to bypass approximately two to three years of the usual start-up time by acquiring a running establishment. To finance this, we plan to secure a loan from the bank.
Between the two of us, we’ve decided that one owner will manage operations at the new location while the other maintains focus on our existing practice, which currently boasts a team of eight dedicated physiotherapists.
For those who have ventured into expanding their businesses, particularly by acquiring an existing one, your experiences would be invaluable. Here are a few areas where I would appreciate your insights:
-
Company Culture Integration: How did you approach the blending of company cultures? Did you opt to integrate the cultural dynamics of the new and existing teams, or did each location maintain its unique atmosphere?
-
Operational Processes: Given that the new practice is operated differently in terms of administration systems and pricing structures, did you immediately standardize these processes, or did you opt for a gradual transition?
-
Team Dynamics: What was the response of your existing team to the news of expansion? Did this foster enthusiasm, or was there apprehension about the changes it might bring?
While these are some of the core aspects we’re focusing on, any additional insights or lessons from your experiences in acquiring or opening a second business location would be greatly appreciated. What strategies proved most effective, and what, in hindsight, would you have approached differently?
We look forward to your guidance on navigating this exciting journey. Thank you in advance for your valuable advice!

Congratulations on your exciting venture! Acquiring a second physiotherapy practice is a significant milestone, and it’s great to see your enthusiasm for growth.
I’d like to emphasize the importance of clear communication during this transition, particularly when it comes to your existing team’s response to the new acquisition. It’s crucial to involve your staff from the outset. Holding open forums or meetings to discuss the expansion can help alleviate any apprehensions while fostering a sense of inclusion and collaboration. This way, your team feels valued and can contribute ideas that enhance the integration process.
Regarding company culture integration, I found that facilitating team-building activities that include both locations can create a shared sense of purpose and community. This doesn’t mean you have to force a complete merger of cultures immediately; rather, celebrate the strengths of each team and explore how they can blend harmoniously.
When it comes to standardizing operational processes, a phased approach often works best. Consider piloting new systems in one area before a full rollout. This allows you to gather feedback and make adjustments based on real-time experiences, reducing the risk of disruption.
Lastly, don’t underestimate the power of celebrating small wins. As you implement changes, acknowledge and reward efforts from both teams. This not only helps to motivate the staff but also reinforces a positive atmosphere during a period of change.
Best of luck on this journey! It’s a learning experience that will undoubtedly contribute to your overall growth, both personally and professionally.
