New Moving Company Owner – Need Advice on Getting More Customers

Expanding Your Customer Base: Strategies for New Moving Company Owners

Starting a new business always comes with its own set of challenges, especially when trying to build a solid customer base. As the proud new owner of Portland Maine Movers, I have experienced the typical hurdles of making a name for myself in the moving industry. Although my company presently manages around 4-5 jobs monthly, my goal is to increase that number significantly to 5-10 jobs weekly.

With over ten years of experience in the moving sector, my past clients have always had positive experiences, and I am committed to maintaining this high standard of service. However, transitioning from being an employee to a business owner means that in addition to providing exceptional service, I must also find ways to effectively market my new business.

Here are the strategies I’ve implemented so far:

  • Business Cards: I’m distributing them at every opportunity.
  • Facebook Presence: Regularly updating our page and interacting with potential clients.
  • Craigslist Advertising: Utilizing the moving services section to reach a wider audience.
  • Website Development: While I’ve set up a website, I’m currently working on improving it due to my limited technical skills.
  • Yard Signs: Recently ordered, though I am exploring the legalities of their placement—whether I should consult with city officials or property owners is still a question I’m pondering.

I am actively seeking additional ideas to boost my visibility and attract more clients. Are there marketing or advertising techniques, lead generation tactics, or local promotion efforts that have proven effective for others in the service industry? Is a stronger emphasis on social media, Google ads, or networking advisable?

I welcome insights from fellow entrepreneurs or marketing professionals who have successfully expanded a service-oriented business. Your guidance will be invaluable as I navigate this new venture. Thank you in advance for sharing your expertise!

  • Congratulations on embarking on this exciting journey as a new business owner! Your commitment to maintaining high standards of service, backed by a decade of experience, provides a solid foundation for growth.

In addition to the strategies you’ve already implemented, I would recommend focusing on building partnerships with local real estate agents and property management companies. They often have clients in need of moving services and can serve as excellent referral sources. You might also consider offering incentives, such as discounts or commissions, to encourage these partners to recommend your services.

Another approach is to leverage customer testimonials and case studies. Since your previous clients had positive experiences, showcasing their feedback on your website and social media can build trust with potential customers. Video testimonials are particularly powerful, as they add a personal touch and bring your customer’s stories to life.

As for online marketing, diving deeper into social media advertising could yield great results, especially platforms like Facebook and Instagram, where you can target specific demographics in your area. Running localized Google Ads can also increase your visibility when people search for moving services near Portland, Maine.

Don’t underestimate the power of community involvement as well. Participating in local events, sponsoring community activities, or collaborating with nearby businesses can significantly enhance your visibility and create goodwill. Building a reputation in your local community can lead to word-of-mouth referrals, which are invaluable in the service industry.

Best of luck with your new venture—I’m excited to see how Portland Maine Movers grows!
