Understanding the Attraction to Big Corporations: A Personal Reflection
It’s a perplexing phenomenon—why do so many individuals find themselves drawn to large organizations and corporate positions? As someone who has recently transitioned from a small firm to a Fortune 500 company, I can’t help but question this allure after facing what I can only describe as a disheartening experience.
For the first eight years of my professional life, I thrived in a small company of around 200 employees, characterized by a flat organizational structure. There was a clear, straightforward hierarchy: CEO, direct managers, and junior staff. With only a few layers between leadership and team members, collaboration and support were the norms. It was a refreshing environment where senior team members genuinely mentored juniors, fostering a sense of collective growth.

These reflections led me to wonder: What draws individuals to continue working in environments that, to me, appear so counterproductive? Is it merely the promise of stability, benefits, or prestige? Are people genuinely content to spend decades engaging in this culture?
I have to admit, I felt somewhat out of place. While I understand that my exposure to corporate life is relatively limited, I am struggling to reconcile my values with the behaviors I observed. Surely, there must be some underlying rationale behind the strategies employed by large corporations. Are these practices truly effective in driving success?
As I navigate this confusion, I’m reaching out for insights. What is it that I might be missing? What motivates individuals to
