Why Do So Many People Choose Corporate Jobs? A Personal Reflection
As someone who has recently navigated the transition from a small company to a Fortune 500 corporation, I find myself grappling with a question that feels increasingly relevant in today’s workplace: Why are so many individuals attracted to large organizations and corporate roles, particularly when my experience in such environments has left me disillusioned?
To provide some context, my career began in a small company with around 200 employees, characterized by a flat organizational structure. In this environment, communication was straightforward: it typically involved just three layers—CEO, Manager, and junior staff. This setup fostered collaboration, straightforward mentorship, and a shared commitment to team performance.
In stark contrast, my experience in a corporate setting was surprisingly negative. From the very start, I encountered a culture rife with what I can only describe as toxicity. There seemed to be an underlying current of competition that prioritized individual advancement over collective success. It was not about fostering a supportive environment where teams united to achieve common goals; rather, it felt like a game of sabotage where gossip prevailed and information was hoarded. As a result, I found myself reevaluating my professional values and ultimately decided to leave corporate life behind in pursuit of launching my own business.
For nearly a decade, I held a belief that the workplace should be built on teamwork, mutual support, and a shared drive to generate success. My experiences within a larger corporate framework felt completely misaligned with these principles. Instead of focusing on performance and improvement, I witnessed colleagues engaging in negativity and backstabbing—activities that seemed far removed from productive work.
