Reflections on Growing a small business: Progress, Challenges, and Some Lessons Learned
Starting a small business often feels like a slow and steady journey. When I embarked on this path, growth was almost imperceptible—landing just one client per week initially. However, over time, I’ve noticed a shift: I’m now receiving more inquiries, and a few clients have become repeat customers. While I wouldn’t say I’m yet earning a substantial income, any additional cash flow is a welcome benefit and reassurance that I’m on the right track.
In this post, I want to share some insights and reflections from my experience so far:
1. The Dynamics of Client Interactions Are Both Rewarding and Challenging
Engaging with clients has proven to be one of the most enjoyable aspects of this journey. It’s rewarding to bring their visions to life and see their satisfaction. That said, it’s not without its frustrations—some interactions can be unexpectedly complex, requiring patience and clear communication.
2. Pricing My Services Is a Balancing Act
Determining what to charge for my work remains a challenging part of running a small business. I’ve encountered clients who expect professional-quality design at very low prices, such as $10. Finding a fair middle ground that values my skills while remaining attractive to clients is an ongoing learning process.
3. Self-Promotion Feels Uncomfortable but Necessary
Marketing myself and my services doesn’t come naturally; it often feels awkward to put myself out there. Nevertheless, I recognize that this is a skill I need to develop. With each effort, I become a bit more confident in promoting my work.
4. The Unique Rhythm of Late-Night Work
There’s a certain different energy to working late into the night on my own projects. The quiet, solitude, and undisturbed focus create an experience unlike any other, making late-night work both challenging and oddly fulfilling.
Final Thoughts
While my business isn’t scaling rapidly, I’m proud of the progress I’ve made. Every new client, lesson learned, and piece of positive feedback energizes me to keep pushing forward. Building a small business is a marathon, not a sprint, and it’s satisfying to see steady, genuine growth—however slow it may be.
