If you’re passionate about handcrafted products but lack experience in business management, you might wonder whether your idea can succeed and how to navigate the challenges ahead. Recently, I’ve been contemplating launching a premium candle and soap line. Having turned my hobby into a small business — creating and gifting beautifully crafted, naturally scented candles and soaps to friends and family — I’ve received enthusiastic encouragement to make this a professional venture. Initial research indicates that sourcing quality raw materials via B2B platforms like Amazon Business or Alibaba could help keep costs manageable, especially when purchasing in bulk.

Addressing the Knowledge Gap

One significant hurdle I face is my limited understanding of how to run a business. While there are numerous resources online — tutorials, articles, and courses — practical advice from existing small business owners can be invaluable. Reflecting on my situation, I’ve identified three crucial aspects I’d need to prepare for:

Another point of contemplation is whether to seek a partnership. A friend has shown interest, primarily with her marketing expertise, which could complement my focus on product creation. However, I am cautious about mixing friendships with business, as conflicts can arise that threaten personal relationships. On the other hand, having a partner could provide shared responsibilities and diverse perspectives, potentially strengthening the venture.
