Turning Passion into Profit: Starting Your Own Candle and Soap Business
Hello, fellow entrepreneurs!
Today, I want to share my journey and aspirations of launching a high-end candle and soap business. After recently losing my job, I’ve decided to turn a long-time hobby into a professional venture. Over the years, I’ve enjoyed creating beautifully scented candles and delicate soaps, even gifting them to friends and family. Their encouragement has motivated me to consider making this my new career path.
I’ve conducted some initial research and discovered various B2B marketplaces, such as Amazon and Alibaba International, which offer competitive prices on raw materials, particularly when buying in bulk. However, I find myself grappling with one significant challenge: I lack any formal knowledge or experience in running a business.
I know there’s an abundance of online resources available—blogs, videos, and articles that can offer guidance—but I’m eager to hear from real small business owners about the top three essential things I should be prepared for as I embark on this journey.
Additionally, I’m pondering whether to enter a partnership with a friend who has expressed interest in joining me. While the idea of collaborating seems appealing—particularly since she has marketing expertise—I’m cautious about mixing friendship with business, as that can often complicate relationships. On the flip side, her insights might be invaluable, and having someone to brainstorm with could enhance our creative process.
I must admit that my husband is skeptical about this venture, suggesting that it may not succeed even before it begins. Despite this, I see this as a promising opportunity, especially since I have the time now that I am unemployed and have always dreamed of becoming my own boss.
I’m eager to hear from anyone who went from having no business knowledge to successfully launching their own venture. What key insights can you share? Your honest feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

Absolutely inspiring to see your passion and entrepreneurial spirit shining through! Transitioning from a hobby to a business can be both rewarding and challenging, especially without formal experience. One key insight is to prioritize learning foundational business skills—consider local workshops, online courses, or mentorship programs that cover essentials like inventory management, pricing strategies, and customer service. These can boost your confidence and prevent common pitfalls.
Regarding your partnership considerations, clear communication and formal agreements are crucial to protect both relationships and your business interests. Setting roles, responsibilities, and conflict resolution processes upfront can make collaborations smoother.
Lastly, leveraging your marketing friend’s expertise can be a significant advantage—perhaps start with small, targeted campaigns to build your brand before scaling. Embrace the learning curve, stay adaptable, and remember that many successful entrepreneurs started with minimal knowledge. Your passion and dedication are powerful assets—best of luck on this exciting journey!
