Turning a Hobby into a Business: Seeking Guidance for My Candle and Soap Venture

Hello, everyone!

I’m excited to share a business idea that’s been brewing for a while, but I’m feeling a bit uncertain about the journey ahead. I recently lost my job, which has given me the push to consider transforming my passion for candle making and soap crafting into a professional venture. Friends and family have encouraged me to take this step after I’ve given them beautifully curated baskets of my creations.

I’ve done some initial research into sourcing raw materials and discovered various B2B platforms, such as Amazon and Alibaba, where I can purchase ingredients in bulk at competitive rates. However, I find myself facing a major hurdle: I have no prior experience in running a business. While I’m aware of the plethora of videos and articles available online, I’m eager to hear from small business owners about the three most crucial aspects I should prepare for and accept as I embark on this journey.

Another consideration is the possibility of partnering with a friend who has expressed interest in my venture. She possesses a strong marketing background, which could complement my skills and allow me to focus on product creation. Yet, I hesitate because I’ve heard mixed reviews about combining friendship with business and worry about jeopardizing our relationship.

Additionally, my husband is skeptical about the feasibility of this idea before I’ve even begun, which adds to my apprehension. Still, this feels like a unique opportunity, especially since I’ve always dreamed of branching out on my own.

Have any of you started a business from scratch without prior knowledge? I would greatly appreciate your honest insights and advice as I contemplate this venture. Thank you for your support!

  • Hi there! It’s inspiring to see your passion and proactive approach to turning your hobby into a potential business. Starting a creative venture like candle and soap making without prior experience is absolutely possible—many entrepreneurs have done so successfully.

A few key points to consider: First, focus on building a solid foundation of knowledge about small business operations—covering basics like pricing, marketing, and legal requirements. Online resources, local small business development centers, and networking groups can provide valuable guidance without overwhelming you. Second, partnering with your friend who has marketing expertise sounds like a smart move—it can help you reach your target audience more effectively, provided you establish clear expectations and communication to preserve your friendship.

Lastly, open dialogue with your husband about your vision, goals, and the steps you plan to take can help address his concerns and foster mutual support. Remember, many successful entrepreneurs started with no prior experience but grew through learning, adaptability, and persistence. Trust in your passion, be willing to learn, and take small, manageable steps forward. Best of luck with your beautiful endeavor!
