After spending the first eight years of my career at a small company—one with fewer than 200 employees and a predominantly flat organizational structure—my transition to a Fortune 500 company was nothing short of a shock to my system.

From a Familiar Environment to Corporate Chaos

My previous workplace was straightforward, with a clear chain of command: CEO, Boss, and Junior Employees. This simplistic hierarchy allowed for open communication and a sense of camaraderie among team members. However, after joining a giant in the corporate sector, I quickly encountered an environment that felt incredibly toxic and disheartening.

The phenomenon of managers playing the “telephone game,” where information gets distorted as it moves up and down the ranks, was rampant. Moreover, I witnessed a troubling culture of backstabbing and criticism, where some individuals seemed more invested in undermining their colleagues than in fostering collaboration and teamwork. It contradicted everything I believed about a productive work atmosphere.

For nearly a decade, I held a firm belief that work should be straightforward: come in, put in your best effort, support your peers, contribute positively to the company’s bottom line, and go home.
