If you’ve ever questioned the allure of corporate jobs and large organizations, you’re not alone. After spending nearly a decade at a small company with a straightforward structure, I recently made the leap to a Fortune 500 firm, and it was a disheartening experience to say the least. I’m left pondering why so many professionals are drawn to corporate environments, especially when my foray into this world felt so contrary to what I believed work should embody.

During my time at a company with around 200 employees, the organizational structure was remarkably flat. There were only a few layers between the CEO, the management, and junior staff, which fostered a sense of unity and teamwork. Everyone was accountable and had a clear impact on the company’s goals. However, upon entering the corporate realm, I encountered a starkly different reality, filled with bureaucracy and competition.

At this Fortune 500 company, I witnessed a culture rife with toxic behaviors—managers played the “telephone game,” seemingly sabotaging one another to gain an upper hand, often prioritizing personal agendas over team success. It felt like a far cry from my previous work environment, where collaboration and support were paramount. Instead of focusing on enhancing team performance or driving profitability, office politics took precedence, leading to gossip, misinformation, and negativity.

For nearly ten years, I operated under the belief that sincerity, hard work, and team support were the keys to success. My transition into the corporate world made me question everything I knew; I found myself surrounded by what seemed to be a pervasive culture of negativity. It left me wondering: why do so many individuals embrace this type of work environment? Are we truly conditioned to accept this cutthroat mentality?

I cannot shake the feeling that I’ve entered an alternate universe. As someone new to this corporate life, I can’t comprehend the rationale behind such behaviors. Is there an underlying reason why this toxic approach seems to prevail?

Throughout my time there, I couldn’t help but feel that this environment was anything but normal, yet everyone else seemed to accept it as the status quo. It begs the question: what drives people to endure this culture for decades?
