Why Do People Gravitate Towards Corporate Jobs? A Personal Reflection

In my recent career transition, I found myself grappling with a thought-provoking question: What draws individuals to corporate jobs and large organizations? After my recent experiences, I must admit I’m left feeling perplexed.

For the first eight years of my professional journey, I thrived at a small company—an intimate team of no more than 200 individuals. The structure was refreshingly flat, with only three hierarchical levels: CEO, manager, and junior team members. In this environment, my manager was deeply involved in mentorship and guidance, fostering a supportive culture that prioritized collaboration and collective success.

However, when I made the leap to a Fortune 500 company, my world was turned upside down. The stark contrast in work culture was a rude awakening. I encountered toxic dynamics, where teams seemed engaged in a silent sabotage of one another and communication often felt like a game of broken telephone. Rather than fostering an environment built on teamwork and shared goals, the focus was heavily skewed towards personal agendas, gossip, and workplace politics. It was disheartening to witness colleagues prioritizing maneuvering others into compromising positions over striving to make the company thrive.

After nearly a decade valuing performance, collaboration, and integrity, it became apparent that this corporate environment was fundamentally misaligned with my principles. The decision to resign and embark on my entrepreneurial journey was not merely a career move; it was a restoration of my professional values.

This raises an intriguing question: Why do so many people seem willing to endure such toxic corporate cultures? Is it merely a case of accepting that this is the norm? I can’t help but wonder if many have internalized the belief that this is simply how corporate life operates. Are they genuinely satisfied waking up to embrace a workplace that feels fundamentally counterproductive?

As I reflect on my experience, I find myself wrestling with a deeper inquiry: is there an underlying rationale that legitimizes these toxic behaviors as essential for corporate success? Or is this simply how the corporate world has trained us to perform?

In my time within the corporate realm, I held a sense of disbelief, convinced that this could not be standard practice. Yet, I watched as my colleagues navigated their roles, seemingly unbothered by the prevailing negativity. It left me with more questions than answers about the nature of corporate culture and the values that drive it.
