Having recently navigated the transition from a small company to a Fortune 500 giant, I find myself grappling with a perplexing question: What is it about large organizations and corporate jobs that draws so many people in, especially when my experience was far from positive?

A Tale of Two Work Environments

For the first eight years of my professional journey, I thrived in a small organization—a close-knit team of around 200 individuals. The structure was remarkably flat, with only three levels: the CEO, my boss, and the junior staff. Despite the seniority among team members, I always felt a direct connection with my boss, who managed us with a personal touch.

However, upon joining a major corporation, I encountered a starkly different reality. My experience was marred by toxicity, manipulation, and a pervasive sense of dissatisfaction. It felt as though I had stepped into a different universe where collaboration was overshadowed by an atmosphere of backstabbing and deceit. Instances of managers engaging in gossip and competing for personal gain were far too common, making me question the very foundation of corporate culture.

Shifting Values

Having invested nearly a decade in the belief that hard work, collaboration, and mutual support would lead to success, I was taken aback by the prevailing mindset in the corporate environment. Instead of focusing on enhancing team performance and contributing positively to the company’s goals, many seemed preoccupied with undermining colleagues and hoarding information. It was disheartening to witness how little time was devoted to fostering a productive and supportive workplace.

As I scoured Reddit and other forums, I discovered that my ordeal was not unique; it seemed to resonate with many others—people sharing anecdotes about similar toxic encounters. This realization left me wondering about the allure that these corporate environments hold for so many.

The Big Question

Why do individuals willingly commit to spending 20 to 30 years of their lives in such an environment? Are they genuinely content with the notion that this is how careers are meant to unfold? It struck me that I was experiencing an entirely different paradigm—one that seemed counterintuitive and fundamentally flawed.

Is this toxic behavior somehow productive? Is there a hidden rationale that justifies the survival of this mindset in corporate structures? If not, why do people continue to subscribe to it?
