Corporate Culture: A Dissonance in Values and Expectations

As I navigate my career path, I find myself grappling with a question that many of us may ponder: why do so many individuals gravitate toward large organizations and corporate roles? My personal experience in this realm has been far from positive, leaving me both perplexed and concerned.

For nearly the first decade of my professional journey, I thrived in a small company environment. With around 200 employees, our structure was notably flat—just three layers between the CEO and junior staff. Here, I found that collaboration was the norm, with senior leaders actively engaging with us and maintaining open lines of communication.

However, my recent transition to a Fortune 500 company marked a stark contrast to my previous experiences. To say it was disappointing would be an understatement. My time there was dominated by counterproductive behaviors: a game of distorted communication among managers, intra-office rivalries, and an overwhelming atmosphere of toxicity. This environment starkly opposed my values, prompting me to leave in pursuit of my own business venture.

In my earlier roles, I had naively presumed that the workplace would be a space where effort, teamwork, and mutual success reigned supreme. I believed in contributing to the company’s growth while collaboratively uplifting my colleagues. Yet, in the corporate arena, I was met with an entirely different dynamic—where scheming and gossip overshadowed genuine performance, and information was often hoarded instead of shared. My time was far too frequently consumed by negativity rather than constructive endeavors aimed at advancing the company’s goals or supporting my team.

Interestingly, my observations seem to resonate with others, as I’ve found numerous shared experiences on platforms like Reddit. This begs the question: what compels individuals to seek out such environments that seem to foster discord?

Is it merely a matter of conformity? Do people genuinely wake up each day and think, “Yes, this corporate struggle is how I wish to spend the next 20-30 years of my life”? It feels like stepping into a surreal alternate universe. Despite my relative inexperience in corporate settings, it strikes me that this culture is perhaps the most counterproductive model imaginable. Is there truly a rationale behind these practices that leads to corporate success?

As I reflected on my time in the corporate world, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was amiss. While everyone continued about their duties as if this was the accepted norm, I was left seeking clarity. What are the underlying motivations for such harmful behaviors
