The Corporate Conundrum: Why Are Some Drawn to Toxic Work Environments?

As someone who has just ventured into the corporate world after spending nearly a decade in a small, close-knit company, I find myself grappling with a perplexing question: Why do so many individuals willingly choose to pursue careers in large organizations and corporate settings, especially when my own experiences have been so negative?

To give you some context, my earlier career unfolded in a relatively small company with a staff of about 200 people. The organizational structure was straightforward — a direct line from the CEO to the managers, and then to junior staff, typically involving just three levels of hierarchy. Is it just me, or do others genuinely feel satisfied choosing to spend 20-30 years immersed in this seemingly unhealthy environment? I truly felt like I had stepped into an alternate reality. My naivety regarding corporate dynamics has made me wonder whether there is an underlying rationale for such behavior that leads to organizational success.

Could there be an unspoken code of conduct in corporate life that I’m completely missing? Perhaps there is a reason behind the prioritization of toxic behaviors over constructive teamwork that keeps this cycle perpetuating.

In my time at the corporate giant, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was exceptionally off. While I felt uncomfortable with the negativity around me, my colleagues seemed
