As someone who has spent the majority of my career in a small business setting, I find myself questioning the widespread allure of corporate jobs, particularly within large organizations. After experiencing a challenging transition to a Fortune 500 company, I can’t help but wonder: what is it about these environments that draws people in, despite the potentially toxic culture they can harbor?
A Taste of the Corporate World
Throughout the first eight years of my professional journey, I was fortunate to work in a small organization of approximately 200 employees. This company had a flat structure, which facilitated open communication and collaboration. The hierarchy was simple: CEO, followed by managers, and then junior staff. This setup allowed for a close-knit workplace where senior colleagues were not just figures of authority—their guidance and mentorship were integral to my professional development.
However, upon pivoting to a larger corporate entity, I was met with a starkly different atmosphere. The experience has often left me bewildered and disappointed.
