Why Some Business Owners Seek Help but Hesitate to Implement Change

As a consultant for small business owners, I’ve had the opportunity to engage in numerous paid consultations. Interestingly, there are times when I find myself playing the role of a therapist rather than a strategic advisor.

Many of the entrepreneurs who approach me for guidance on Instagram express a desire for increased engagement, improved reach, and overall growth. I genuinely enjoy these sessions, especially when clients take my advice seriously and implement the changes we discuss. Those who do often see remarkable transformations in their businesses.

However, I’ve noticed a concerning trend: many clients seem to walk away without making any alterations to their approach. After a thorough discussion that dives deep into essential topics such as brand clarity, messaging, content strategy, profile optimization, and audience engagement, I sometimes find myself pondering why my insights are left unutilized.

It feels as though some clients are simply paying for a chance to air their frustrations rather than seeking actionable advice. This leaves me questioning the motivations behind their decision to seek consultation in the first place.

Perhaps it’s just my perspective, but I believe that running a business should spark an intrinsic motivation to learn and adapt. Understanding your audience is crucial—after all, they are the source of your income.

So, I find myself asking: why invest in professional help if you intend to disregard it? Why not fully commit to achieving the growth you claim to desire?

Is this behavior more common than I realize, or am I merely encountering a unique subset of clients? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences on this phenomenon.
