Should I Start My Own Barber Business at 18?
As an aspiring entrepreneur, you may find yourself grappling with significant decisions, especially when it comes to launching your own business. I’m currently at a crossroads, and I’d like to share my story to seek advice from those who may have faced similar choices.
For the past five years, I have immersed myself in the world of barbering, starting my journey at the age of 13. Initially, I provided free haircuts until I was 15, when I began my apprenticeship. My mentors were impressed with my natural skill and helped me refine my craft and eliminate some unproductive habits. By the age of 16, I earned my barber’s license, and I’ve worked about 45 hours a week ever since.
Now that I’ve graduated high school and accumulated five years of hands-on experience, I’m contemplating a significant next step: should I open my own barber shop? I’ve managed to save up roughly $80,000, which my father believes puts me in a solid financial position to take this leap. I already have a steady client base, particularly within my local Muslim community, and I’m often booked out about two weeks in advance. This makes me confident in my ability to attract and maintain customers right from the start.
However, I can’t shake off the uncertainty that accompanies such a big decision at my age. Should I stick with my current shop for a bit longer and work more hours to build even greater financial stability before venturing out on my own? Or is now the ideal time to harness my existing skills, clientele, and savings to take the plunge into entrepreneurship?
I would love to hear thoughts from anyone who has experience in starting their own business, especially in a trades field. What factors should I consider before making this move? Is age merely a number when it comes to pursuing your dreams, or are there practical reasons to wait a little longer? Your insights would be greatly appreciated!
