As a dedicated general contractor and owner of a construction firm, I have spent several years establishing my presence in a predominantly male field. Recently, I’ve been contemplating the addition of a personal bio to our company website. My intention is to humanize our brand and foster trust with potential clients. However, I find myself grappling with significant reservations.

Early in my career, a male peer bluntly asserted that men would be reluctant to collaborate with a woman in this industry. Despite initially brushing off his comments, I’ve encountered various forms of bias over the years that have had real-world implications.

One particularly distressing experience unfolded when I took on a client who subsequently decided to withhold a substantial payment, leading to a legal dispute. In a lengthy correspondence that accompanied his refusal to pay, he stated that he felt “duped,” as he had presumed my husband—a valued member of my team—was the general contractor. His words revealed an uncomfortable truth: had he known I was in charge, he would have chosen not to work with us.

While I would like to dismiss him as an outlier, I can’t ignore the possibility that his sentiments resonate with others silently. This concern weighs heavily on me as I consider prominently featuring my name and face on our site.

On the flip side, I am determined to attract clients who appreciate my expertise. Those who choose to engage with me soon recognize my proficiency and the thoroughness with which I manage projects. I am confident in my capabilities as a general contractor, but I worry: will potential clients hesitate to reach out just because of my gender?

I find myself at a crossroads. Should I embrace transparency and showcase my authentic self, or take a more cautious approach by allowing my work to speak for itself until a conversation is underway?
