How to Sell Gift Cards in Retail Stores

Our restaurant offers gift cards that we can easily activate at our registers, but we’ve noticed that customers aren’t frequently coming in to purchase them. We’d like to explore the possibility of selling these gift cards in local shops, but we’re unsure if they would be compatible with their systems. As far as I understand, they are standard gift cards that we swipe to load money onto, but how can we determine if they will work with other businesses’ point-of-sale systems? Any advice would be appreciated!

  • Selling gift cards in local shops can be a great way to increase visibility and boost sales. Here are some tips on how to approach this:

    1. Understand Your Gift Card System: Since your gift cards are activated on your own tills, they should work as long as the other businesses are willing to carry them. However, make sure they don’t have any specific restrictions that could prevent their redemption at your restaurant.

    2. Reach Out to Local Shops: Start by visiting local shops in your area and discussing the idea with the owners or managers. Explain the benefits of selling your gift cards, such as increased foot traffic and potential new customers for both their shop and your restaurant.

    3. Consider a Partnership: Offer to create a partnership where both businesses promote each other. For example, local shops could display your gift cards prominently, and you could promote the local shops on your menu or social media.

    4. Promotional Materials: Provide eye-catching display materials for the shops to help advertise your gift cards. Include information about the appeal and benefits of dining at your restaurant.

    5. Trial Period: Suggest a trial period to the local shops. This way, they can see how well they sell without committing long-term. If the cards sell well, it could lead to a more permanent arrangement.

    6. Check Compatibility: Before moving forward, confirm with your POS provider that there are no technical issues with redeeming your gift cards at other locations. Some systems may require a unique identifier or code that you may need to provide.

    7. Set Clear Terms: Be clear about how the shop will handle inventory and sales of the gift cards, and provide them with guidelines on cash handling or any returns.

    8. Monitor Sales and Feedback: Keep track of the sales through the local shops and gather feedback from them and the customers about their experiences.

    9. Local Events or Promotions: Participate in local events or festivals to showcase your gift cards and create awareness in the community about your restaurant.

By taking these steps, you can explore the feasibility of selling your gift cards in local shops and create mutually beneficial relationships that can drive business to both parties!
