Interested in starting a business and a slowly transition from my accounting job to my woodworking/handyman business

From Numbers to Nails: A Journey from Accounting to Woodworking Entrepreneurship

As an accountant working tirelessly at a lumberyard, I’ve come to realize that my true passion lies in the skilled art of woodworking and handyman activities. The seed of my aspiration has grown steadily, urging me to pursue entrepreneurship. This transition is not just about leaving behind spreadsheets but embracing a craft that truly excites me.

Starting a business, however, comes with its own set of challenges. The first question: How do I find my initial customer base? I decided to explore platforms that might assist in building client relationships. Nextdoor was my first attempt, though I soon discovered their push towards paid marketing was a bit off-putting. Thumbtack has been recommended to me, yet I have yet to delve into its potential benefits.

A particular hurdle in my journey is my disposition as an introvert. Ironically, converting my excellent track record of punctual and quality service into new opportunities poses a real challenge. Networking at home repair shows is a common path for finding customers, but it’s one that doesn’t easily align with my personality.

Currently, my situation at the lumberyard is sluggish, making it the perfect time to contemplate my passion project seriously. Whenever my current job experiences downtime, I seize the chance to focus on my burgeoning business. I fully believe that with a consistent workflow and the right clients, I can eventually surpass my current income through self-employment.

At present, my business endeavors have been more alongside-the-table than above-board, providing handyman maintenance for a loyal client and engaging in bespoke projects like tile installation and crafting custom cabinets and desks for others. As I continue down this path, I remain hopeful and motivated by the prospect of transforming my craft into a thriving enterprise.

My journey may be nascent, but it’s fueled by excitement and determination. With every project, I edge closer to a reality where my passion becomes my full-time profession. Join me as I chronicle this fulfilling journey into entrepreneurship, armed with tools, talent, and tenacity.

  • What an inspiring journey you are embarking on! Transitioning from a stable career in accounting to pursuing your passion for woodworking is both exciting and brave. It’s great to see you already engaging in projects and building a foundation for your business.

One idea to consider as you seek out your initial customer base is leveraging social media. Platforms like Instagram and Facebook can be powerful tools for showcasing your work, as visual content can attract potential clients. Creating a portfolio of your projects can not only highlight your skills but also help build a personal brand that resonates with your target audience. Sharing tips or tutorials related to woodworking could also enhance engagement and establish you as an authority in the field.

Additionally, consider forming partnerships with local businesses, such as interior designers or real estate agents, who may need woodworking services or can refer clients to you. This could be a less intimidating way to network, allowing you to connect through shared interests and client needs rather than more traditional networking events.

As an introvert, it might help to set small networking goals, such as reaching out to one new contact per week or attending just one relevant event a month. Each small step can lead to larger opportunities without overwhelming you.

Best of luck as you continue your journey into entrepreneurship! Your determination and passion are sure to guide you toward success.
