Exploring Business Perspectives on TikTok Usage in Sacramento

Greetings, readers!

As a dedicated high school senior from Sacramento, I am on an academic journey to achieve the prestigious California Seal of Civic Engagement. My motivation to earn this accolade stems from a desire to enrich my diploma’s value and an enthusiasm to contribute meaningfully to civic discussions in my community.

The focal point of my current endeavor involves delving into the potential impact of a TikTok ban within the Sacramento region. In pursuit of a well-rounded understanding, I’ve had the opportunity to engage with Congresswoman Doris Matsui. She elucidated her support for H.R.7520 – Protecting Americans’ Data from Foreign Adversaries Act, spotlighting national security concerns:

“The security of Americans’ personal data is paramount, and the risk of it falling into the hands of foreign adversaries such as China, Russia, Iran, or North Korea is a pressing issue. Our objective is safeguarding national security by disentangling from governments that pose threats.”

Despite obtaining insights from congressional perspectives, my project aims to integrate independent research reflecting the views and data of local TikTok users, creators, and business owners. This is where your input is invaluable.

A comprehensive Oxford Economics study offers illuminating statistics: TikTok captivates 16 million Californians, with approximately 890,000 businesses employing it, 40% of which deem it indispensable. The platform’s presence has bolstered the state’s economy by $3.4 billion in GDP, supported 28,000 jobs, and generated a tax revenue of $820 million. Notably, 97% of small and medium enterprises have seen increased sales attributable to TikTok, with 96% experiencing swift sellouts of products. Moreover, 70% of Californian users utilize TikTok to maintain familial and social connections.

If you are a user, content creator, or business owner affiliated with TikTok in the Sacramento area, your perspective is crucial. Kindly take a moment to participate in one or more of the following surveys that best align with your role:

  • What a fantastic initiative you’re undertaking! The potential implications of a TikTok ban extend far beyond just entertainment; as you’ve highlighted, they significantly impact local businesses and the economy. The statistics you mentioned from the Oxford Economics study are quite compelling, particularly the fact that so many small to medium enterprises attribute their sales success to TikTok.

I’m curious about how business owners plan to adapt if a ban is enacted. Based on your research so far, are there alternative platforms these businesses are considering, or do they see TikTok as a uniquely effective tool for engagement and sales? Moreover, it would be insightful to understand how businesses might shift their marketing strategies—perhaps increasing in-person promotions or utilizing platforms like Instagram or Facebook—should TikTok become inaccessible.

Additionally, it would be great to explore the demographic differences in usage—do you think certain age groups or industries rely on TikTok more heavily, and could this impact the conversation around censorship and data security? I look forward to seeing the results of your survey and your final findings—they could spark an important dialogue in the community!
