As small business owners in the manufacturing sector, my wife and I have carved out distinct roles within our company. While I focus on operations and customer relations, she expertly handles the financial management and vendor interactions. With the increasing need for flexibility, particularly for our family responsibilities, we are exploring efficient ways to enable remote work, especially during the summer months or unexpected situations, like a child needing to stay home due to illness.

Transitioning to a Digital Workspace

A significant portion of our current operations relies on physical documentation, particularly with PDFs, Excel, and Word documents, stored in traditional filing cabinets. Our immediate goal is to transition from paper to digital, allowing both of us seamless access to these resources remotely. Option 2: Utilizing a Synology NAS for Shared Access

Another option is leveraging a Synology NAS that we already own, currently used for backup purposes. By hosting QuickBooks on the desktop and using the NAS for our document storage, we benefit from its multiple-user access and version control features. This option may require some adjustment for my wife due to the different interface.

Option 3: Implementing a VPN Solution

A third possibility involves hosting QuickBooks on the desktop and establishing a VPN for secure remote file access. This way, the infrastructure remains local, providing us greater control over our data.

Option 4: Investing in a Dedicated Server

Similarly, we could substitute the desktop with a more robust server to host our files, ensuring stable and efficient file management and access.
